Case #1:
Understanding the Needs of Patients Living with a Rare Cancer
The Challenge
A biopharmaceutical company developing a future treatment for an ultra-rare cancer was searching for ways to understand and engage patients. The population of patients was quite rare and difficult to find.
Our Impact
In partnership and leveraging our proprietary database of thousands of opted-in individuals, Healthful Stories was able to identify and engage several appropriate patients in a series of roundtable dialogues.
Through these conversations, the biopharmaceutical company was able to design and implement several novel programs to engage and serve patients in their unique healthcare journey: from providing lodging and food support, through to ensuring that the right information is available at the right time to meet patient needs.
Certain interviews were recorded and shared within the biopharmaceutical company, helping each employee feel inspired and engaged in the collective mission to deliver important new medicines to patients.
Case #2:
Identifying and Activating Individuals with Asymptomatic Illness
The Challenge
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is the more severe form of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Patients with advanced NASH often have normal aminotransferases and are thus often left undiagnosed, as most providers use the presence of abnormal liver chemistries to perform a biopsy.
Our Impact
Partnering with Healthful Stories, a biopharmaceutical company was able to create a framework for identifying and activating individuals with risk factors for MASLD and MASH. Risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, abnormal fat levels in the blood, age, race, menopause status, and diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea were utilized to generate a risk and activation score that encouraged individuals to seek formal diagnosis.
Activation through our proprietary health engagement platform included encouragement to see a physician and engage in the appropriate screening protocols.
Case #3:
Machine Learning to Assess Likelihood of Bone Fracture
The Challenge
Untreated osteoporosis can lead to serious bone fractures, especially in the hips and spine, even after minor bumps or falls. The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health says that one in three women will experience a broken bone caused by osteoporosis over their lifetime. Hip fractures can cause serious pain and disability and require surgery.
1 in 3 adults over 50 who don’t have osteoporosis yet have some degree of reduced bone density (osteopenia). Healthful Stories partnered with a leading developer of novel treatments for osteoporosis, applying our machine learning and algorithmic scoring to determine the likelihood of fracture for individuals with or without a diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Our Impact
Working with Healthful Stories, our partner was able to increase their addressable patient population by 3-fold, ushering rejuvenated excitement with senior management in the opportunity to serve patients with osteoporosis.
Case #4:
Addressing Health Disparity in HIV Access to Diagnosis and Treatment
The Challenge
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) set the 90-90-90 goals in 2014 to help end the AIDS epidemic. The goals are:
- 90% of people living with HIV should be diagnosed
- 90% of those diagnosed should receive antiretroviral therapy (ART)
- 90% of those treated should achieve viral suppression.
The United States is on course to reach the 90-90-90 goals in the near future, with 86% of persons with HIV aware of their infection, 74% of persons with diagnosed infection in care, and 83% of persons living with HIV in care with viral suppression. There is still significant room to improve.
Our Impact
Healthful Stories partnered with a leading provider of treatments for HIV to understand the barriers to diagnosis and access to treatment for HIV medicines. Through series of engagements and quantitative data collection through our platform, Healthful Stories was able to help our partner identify key barriers to treatment and uncover novel ways to address these systematically.
Some of the unique challenges we identified and dimensionalized include: poor health literacy, poor financial literacy, stigma, lack of transportation, housing instability, and more. Some of these were easily addressable through additional investment in direct-to-consumer education efforts, which increased tremendously as a result of our work.
Case #5:
Colorectal Cancer Voices: Accelerating the Cure, Fast-Tracking Hope
The Challenge
To raise awareness and accelerate cures for colorectal cancer (CRC), Healthful Stories organized the Colorectal Cancer Voices campaign, aiming to interview as many people with CRC as possible in October and November.
Our Impact
Healthful Stories has conducted 150 patient interviews and 20 KOL (Key Opinion Leader) interviews to raise awareness and amplify voices. We also sent selected videos to Congress to advocate for curative approaches to CRC.
